What languages do you speak?

I speak English and Mandarin natively, Spanish and Portuguese fluently, and am at beginner’s level in American Sign Language.

  • Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, Columbia University
  • Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with a minor in Theatre, University of San Francisco
  • American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) certified
  • Texas Speech and Hearing Association (TSHA) certified

Why did I decide to become a Speech-Language Pathologist?

Being a neurodivergent individual and a child of immigrants growing up between 3 countries, I grew up observing the social isolation that results from communication struggles. From that experience, I became passionate about helping people that feel different to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate their inner beauty.

What are my specializations?

I have worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the public school, home health, outpatient clinic and telehealth settings across numerous cities around the world. I work with all age ranges of people with speech and language delays,  stuttering, accent modification, and social cognitive delays as a result of autism, Down syndrome, hearing loss, or with no other diagnosis. Click here to read about services.

What is my treatment approach?

I believe a person is more than a number. My evaluations are extensive, as I use a combination of standardized testing and dynamic assessment. Dynamic assessment is crucial as it uses research from a more similar sociolinguistic background in order to make a more accurate diagnosis.

I take time to understand each person’s unique learning style and a session with me is never identical with two different people. Depending on their needs, I integrate my Speech-Language Pathologist knowledge with my experiences as actress and director of theatre (including for the Deaf population), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) strategies,  being a member of Toastmasters Mexico,  Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies, children’s yoga teacher training, child-directed play, multisensory speech production, Boal’s theatre of the opressed, Michelel Garcia Winner’s Social Thinking, in order to create a customized treatment plan for each individual.

“Our daughter, Dia, was diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss shortly after birth, and wears hearing aids. In addition, we speak to her in Mandarin and Spanish at home, and she learns English at daycare. We found that the speech therapists with Early Intervention weren’t able to accurately assess her needs and progress, and finding Kaiting was like discovering a unicorn!

Not only did Kaiting’s language skills support our daughter’s particular learning environment, but her approach to our daughter’s needs was thoughtful, un-hurried and personal. She spent time getting to know us and how we raise her, and got to know Dia’s personality as well. The therapy treatments she used were engaging and enjoyable for Dia, perfectly meeting the learning needs of a 1.5 year old and taking into account her interests, and she warmed up to Kaiting immediately. Our sessions were always fun for Dia, and informative for us.

As parents, we were giving the skills needed to continue therapy with her on our own between sessions. Even after “graduating” from a particular set of therapy, Kaiting left us with ways to continue encouraging Dia’s development. When we did our next speech assessment with Early Intervention, we were told that in some areas, Dia was much farther ahead than expected.

“Our daughter’s speech has exploded in both English and Spanish. She’s also much more confident in trying to speak, and she’s excited to try new words. She beams with pride, and she’s much less frustrated than she was previously. She’s by no means perfect, but for the first time, we’re seeing a real and steady improvement that is uplifting for both her and us as her parents.

Seeing her connect two and three-word phrases has been really fun, because it has allowed her to interact more with her brother and with us. She most recently has been saying “no thank you” to just about anything, and it’s fun and adorable. We’ll say it’s time for bed, and she’ll run away saying “no thank you.” It just cracks us up, and she knows it— her improved speech has allowed her to express herself and reveal her personality more, which is quite feisty it seems.

Kaiting is flexible, caring, creative, responsive and multilingual. Most of all, she was incredibly effective in reaching our child and getting her excited about expressing herself. I also felt that the evaluation was thorough, and her place on the “curve” of language acquisition was explained very clearly to us. I knew where we were starting, I had an idea of where we wanted to be and the milestones along the way. Most importantly, she gave us tools to work with Emma at home. And they were simple. They didn’t feel like work, they easily integrated into our lives, but they made a real and tangible difference in how we interacted with our daughter and how she responded to us. Moreover, for anyone in a bilingual household, I can’t emphasize enough how wonderful it is to have someone be able to communicate in both language or even understand the nuances of children being raised in a multilingual household.

What I found most helpful, was that we were instructed, very simply on how to engage her more when speaking— how to encourage two-word phrases, how to use Hand motions to show “give me” or other things that aren’t difficult for us to try and model at home. I also appreciated that she would text me a question prior to a less to gauge how she was doing and where we were.

These therapy sessions were really clear and effective. The communication style between us (parent and therapist) as well as with our daughter was easy and natural.

Caregiver Training

I provide training to caregivers that want to learn how to work with their child to improve speech and language and/or create a strong multilingual home environment. Every word said or unsaid, every gesture, every behavior serves some purpose of communication. As a team, we create language activities and behavior treatment plans that help a child reach their full communication potential.
